Belton Issues Statement on Greene Homicide

May 19, 2021

It is of the utmost importance that the Ronald Greene family and our community, as a whole, be provided complete and truthful answers about what happened to him.

For our justice system to properly function, citizens must have trust and confidence in the justice process.  To ensure an independent investigation into the death of Mr. Greene, on the day I received the report from the Louisiana State Police, I asked the United States Department of Justice to conduct an independent review of the circumstances surrounding his death, including whether any criminal or civil rights violations occurred.

To date, the federal investigation is ongoing. Ethically, I am prevented from making any extrajudicial comments while this matter is under investigation.  Furthermore, the United States Attorney for the Western District of Louisiana has asked that I make no comments regarding the merits and investigation of the case.  My office will await the conclusion of the federal investigation before making any further comment or decisions in this case.

Greene died two years ago while in custody of the Louisiana State Police near the Crossroads community in Union Parish.

The case wasn’t made public until a year after the incident, when the Greene family filed a federal wrongful death lawsuit.

Yesterday, the Asssociate Press published the bodycam videos of the incident.

So they’ve specifically asked him not to comment. Don’t you just love how this prevailing political power system works?

But he did comment. Three paragraphs worth. He can’t comment on the facts of the case until the facts are presented to him by the FBI.

He’s letting you know how they’re attempting to tie his hands behind his back just like these officers did to Greene. Watch the video. If you don’t think institutionalized racism exists you’re not living in the same world as I am. And I’m white. The whitest of white. My husband and I have left parties before because “they” thought we were okay with discussing the idea that somebody should create a product that could be used by a cropduster to target only black people to kill them. Because we are white. In their mind they couldn’t imagine that another white person didn’t think the way they did. So so so wrong.

I used to work for a very prominent bank in Ruston. We gave away popcorn every Friday. I was tasked to make the popcorn one Friday. Not in my wheelhouse so didn’t do a great job the first time around. Earnest was my manager’s name. Earnest told me to just give the popcorn I had popped to the black people that came in. “They will never know” was the reason he gave to me when I protested.

Institutionalized racism exists. Now. In your parish.

      Fight it.

You’re making a lot of assumptions about me. I’m just saying the D.A. can’t do a thing until he gets the case.
