Stone Not Running for Lincoln Sheriff?

Area voters have been recently “robo-polled” on several potential candidates for Lincoln Parish Sheriff, Lincoln Parish News Online (LPNO) has learned.

The automated calls originated from a 225 area code, which would indicate the Baton Rouge area. LPNO was told the call begins by claiming that incumbent Lincoln Parish Sheriff Mike Stone has indicated to some of his supporters that he may not seek reelection this fall.

Several names are mentioned as possible candidates: Chad Alexander, Jim Tuten, and Stephen Williams (all LPSO deputies); and Randall Hermes, now Chief of the LA Tech Police, and former Ruston PD Chief. The call then asks the voter to make a selection.

Adding to the speculation that Stone may not run is the lack of money in his campaign fund. As of 1/8/15, Stone had but $4,200 on hand.

Sad, sad day for Lincoln Parish if anyone in that list of names runs. Hopefully Mike Stone will run again.

You want to know who did the push poll, follow the money. Obviously not Stone. I got the call and have suspicions as to its derivation but cant confirm yet.

One thing was clear, name id is a problem for all of them.

    Get some people who can man up and tell the truth on that list cause the ones on that list cant;

I do not know who is trying to pull a fast one but I am not counting Mike out unless I hear it straight from him. In fact all indications are that he will run again. Most people do not realize that this summer he will become the president of the Louisiana Sheriff’s association, a very powerful position. That does not sound like a loser or quitter to me.

Some on that list have already violated peoples rights— now they want to be Sheriff —-We need a man for that job not any of you tenderfoot clowns.

Here is what you have on that list—-ineptitude, ignorance, dishonesty, corruption, tyranny and down right hypocrite cowards who were not men enough to tell the truth—justice is based on truth NOT politics but I reckon that has not trickled down to Lincoln parish yet.

Dan rails and whines about Lincoln Parish law enforcement but has yet to lay out a single fact to back up his complaints. Time for specifics, Dan, or shut up!

Since most of those on the list are deputies, Dan, why are you for Mike Stone if he employs “inept, ignorant, dishonest, corrupt, tyrannical, hypocrite cowards?”

Instead of speculating and spreading rumors, you could pick up the phone and ask Sheriff Stone if he’s running.

    Statement released 4/8/2015:

I want to thank all of you for the opportunity you have given me to serve as your Sheriff for the past eleven years. Our Sheriff’s Office team has strived to give you the programs and services worthy of you the citizens of Lincoln Parish. I feel very strongly that we have more to accomplish in the Parish to keep you safe and protected. Below is my announcement that I will be a candidate for Sheriff this year and stating the reasons for my decision. I covet your prayers, support, and vote for Sheriff of this great Parish.

Sheriff Mike Stone announced today that he is officially running for his fourth term as Lincoln Parish Sheriff. “Given the amount of new training and other mandates that are coming, stability and continuity in the Lincoln Parish Sheriff’s Department will be crucial,” Stone said. “The Sheriff’s department has experienced many positive changes while we’ve been here and we must be well trained and prepared for the future.” During his time as Sheriff, Stone has been credited with significantly strengthening the drug enforcement efforts in Lincoln Parish through the use of LPNET and other programs. In fact, since Stone became Sheriff in 2004 and took over as Chairman of LPNET, the number of drug-related arrests made by the task force has increased dramatically. In 2001, LPNET made just 35 drug-related arrests for the whole year. Compare that with the Stone years, when LPNET has made an average of 203 drug-related arrests a year. “If we can continue to work to keep the drugs down and under control, we are all safer,” Stone said. “Drugs lead to other crimes, such as theft, assault, and other violence.”

In addition to continue strictly enforcing drug trafficking laws in the Parish, Stone said there were several other goals for his fourth term. Stone said there are more improvements to make at the Lincoln Parish Detention Center. When the Sheriff’s office took over management of the Detention Center in 2012, the jail was operating in the red. Stone says the detention center is now operating in the black, and he has made several improvements to the facility, such as upgraded security, including a second fence surrounding the complex. Echoing his longtime promise as Sheriff to be “Tough on Crime, Smart on Prevention,” Stone said there are several programs he is presently working on to help prevent future crime. “We want to stop recidivism (or coming back to jail) by instituting GED, vocational training and substance abuse classes at the Lincoln Parish Detention Center,” Stone said.

The Sheriff said overseeing a 21st-century technology upgrade also will be another priority of his in the coming years. “The department is in the process of adding cameras in its patrol cars, which the public and the deputies both want,” Stone said. “We also will implementing new technology into the 911 center, the emergency operations center and our dispatch system, all of which will help us serve the public quicker and more efficiently.” Stone is also credited with securing outside funding, with little cost to local taxpayers, for the recently opened state-of-the-art Lincoln Parish Public Safety Complex, which was built entirely with federal and state grants. “We’ve always been prudent and good stewards of the public’s money,” Stone said. “From putting School Resource Officers in our schools to adding an elderly protection officer and implementing the “How are You” program to check on our seniors, we’ve been able to offer the services that help make Lincoln Parish a safe environment to live, work and raise families.”

Stone, a lifelong resident of Lincoln Parish, has been with the Sheriff’s Department for 39 years, the last 11 as Sheriff. Stone is married to Mariam Hammons (Stone), and they have two children, Melanie Stone Binns (married to Zach Binns) and Matthew Stone (married to Tara Kaufman Stone), and three grand children, Audrey Grace and Samuel Stone, and Preston Binns. Mike and Mariam attend Temple Baptist Church. “I have a deep appreciation for the values that make Lincoln Parish such a wonderful place, and I am committed to making sure it stays that way,” says Stone. “It would be an honor to continue to serve as Lincoln Parish Sheriff, and I humbly ask for your vote and support.”
