Cameron Mays was assigned new counsel this morning in Third Judicial (Lincoln, Union Parishes) District Court in Ruston.
James Buckley, a Monroe, LA, based attorney, will be defending Mays against charges of murdering retired Grambling State University (GSU) professor Susan Hashway, aggravated rape of a Louisiana Tech Student, robbery, possession of stolen things, and other related charges.
This is Mays’ third attorney since being arrested for the crimes in June, 2012.
His first attorney, Joseph Clark, passed away. His second attorney, Indigent Defender DeAnna McCallum, was recently appointed as an Assistant District Attorney, and was released because of the conflict of interest.
Buckley will serve as an indigent defender for Mays.
The next hearing in the case is set for April 21, 2015. Trial is set for September 28, 2015.
Handling the case for the state this morning was First Assistant DA Laurie James. Presiding today was Division B Judge Tommy Rogers.
