All Jonesboro Political Offices Contested

All the elected positions in the Town of Jonesboro that up for a Tuesday, November 4 vote are contested, according to the Louisiana Secretary of State’s candidate website.

Four candidates have filed for mayor: James Bradford, Mike Holder, Alvin Jones, and Renee Stringer. Holder ran for mayor eight years ago, while Stringer is the incumbent District B Alderwoman. Jones had been the District C Alderman from 1994 to 2002.

There are two candidates for Chief of Police: James Harris and Maxie Monroe. Harris currently works for the department, and Monroe is the Ward Five Jackson Parish Police Juror. Monroe had previously worked in the department.

Incumbent chief Wesley Horton, first elected in 1994, did not run for re-election.

The Alderman-at-Large seat has four candidates: Nia Evans, Janet Martin, Theresa Moore, and Johnny Runyon. Incumbent LaStevic Cottonham did not run for re-election.

District A has three candidates: Heather Graham, Randy Layfield, and Craig Williams. Layfied had served in that slot for three terms from 1998 to 2010. Incumbent Sam Lamkin did not file.

District B (incumbent Renee Stringer) saw three filers: Douglas Cary, Robbie Siadek, and Stacy Strickland.

District C’s race has two contestants: Charla Mason-Melton, the incumbent, and Pete Stringer. In 2010, Mason-Melton defeated Stringer who had held the seat since 2002.

In District D, incumbent Devin Flowers is challenged by John Bradley and John Williams.

Ready or not, the race is on!!!! May the voters make only the wisest decisions to fill the positions. Do not vote because of race, but vote for the best candidates that will endeavor to restore honesty and integrity to City Hall and Jonesboro.

  2. kbp Says:

That reads like good news, to one not knowing the candidates.

More waste of Our tax dollars. Why was the town owned fire department vehicle in St. Rest at a political church function. Is that malfeasance. I wonder if Renee will check into that?

    • FatManSings Says:

What is a “Political Church Function?” Is it similar to a “Political School Function” where a town official might be asked to speak on an issue related to Fire or Crime Prevention??? Have you ever heard of a Sheriff’s Car or other Police Car being present at a “Political Church Function” or “Political School Function” where the Deputy, Sheriff–or other Police Officer might have been speaking on the topic of “Crime Prevention?”

Is it possible that a member of the Church at St. Rest who lives in the Town of Jonesboro asked the occupant (s) of the truck to be at their church for a special service? Does that happen sometimes?

What if that department provides services in the area of that church, even in the form of occasional mutual aid, and a member of that church calls a representative of that department to provide a presentation on fire prevention??? And, what if the representative of that department was attending a service so that the congregation may offer to publically show their appreciation to that individual for providing services to that particular area???

Finally, consider this: What if First Baptist Church in Jonesboro, Ebenezer Baptist, First Assembly in Hodge, Hodge Baptist Church, Quitman Baptist or Methodist, Brown Grove Baptist, Union Star, Travelers Rest, or Chatham Baptist (or Methodist) Church held an appreciation service for First Responders (Police, Fire, EMS) personnel and invited all First Responders, parish-wide, to be a part of that appreciation service. Fact is, there would possibly be Firefighters and Police Officers from all over the parish there, and nobody would think–nor say–a damned thing about it. Fact.

Don’t make us “read between the lines;” spell out what the “real” issue is here. Everybody knows that there is another issue; “speak it out!”

The Fat Man has Sung . . .

We need to check out The fire chief a lot of things he does would get him a room with his good buddy Leslie.Fire chief is trying to keep his job after election. The fire department needs to be investigated.

      • Anonymous Says:

Why don’t you call for an investigation then if you’re so sure of wrong doing in the office of the fire chief. Oh no then you’d have to show your face and we all know it’s easier to hide behind a computer and make up crap and flat out lie on someone.

      • Anonymous Says:

I though that the fire equipment belonged to the town, why is it at st rest? What about the cost ?The parish has it’s own equipment ,why don’t they show up with the town as backup? The answer my frends is politics. With the mayor election coming up they are trying to get all their ducks in a row to get the mayor they want. The fire chief needs to be
Asked what he is doing outside of town.

      • ANON Says:

How can being at church service at St Rest can help chief to keep his job? Was Holder or Bradford or Jones or Stringer at St Rest with him?

        • Not The News Star Says:

Whoopeeee Renee will be gone after this election!!! lol

    • The Jet Says:

Say what you will about Renee, she brings up important issues and says things that need to be said, that other people are afraid to say. She was the lone voice of sanity and accountability in this clown show of a government those three long, miserable years between Captain Eyepatch’s re-election in 2010 and his conviction and the subsequent takeover by the state FA. I’d like to have her around still, maybe not as mayor, but involved with Jonesboro in some capacity.

    • sunrisesunset Says:

Donald Fowler, is this you? Haven’t heard anything from you in a very long time.

  6. The Jet Says:

Early impressions, handicapping this race, I’d say it is Bradford’s to lose. He’s got the demographics on his side, is sane and level-headed and has a better reputation and more political capital with the white community than Thompson ever had. Can he govern? That is the question. I think we’re going to find out. I think he gets into a runoff easily (really and truly, I think Kim Jones is in this race just to make sure there IS a runoff, I do not see him getting in it though).

Don’t count out Mike Holder, though. People generally trust him, generally like him. He can win this thing. Unlike Bradford though, he is more of a question mark to get into the runoff. His hurdle is higher to clear.

I think the General is gonna go something like this:

    Bradford 40%
    Holder 31%
    Stringer 17%
    Jones 12%

I think Holder edges out Renee in the white vote; she’s just made too many people mad at her over the years. Mike runs as a uniter, not a divider and makes the runoff.

    Holder 51%
    Bradford 49%

I think Mike will peel off just enough black vote to put him over the top.

I hope people also focus in on the aldermen and police chief races. Those are going to be just as important. Sometime during this term, Folden will hand the town back over to the mayor’s office. When that happens, Jonesboro needs a functioning city govt. with all involved parties working together and getting along for the betterment of all citizens.

    • Oldman Says:

Hope you are right, kind of wish Renee would drop out.She would never make a good mayor with her attitude.Ithink Holder would make the best Mayor,he’s the most honest of the bunch, had good up bringing.Everybody needs to get out and vote.

      • Anonymous Says:

        Double amen. RS, go away.

      • Anonymous Says:

Oldman, who are you to judge the quality of mayoral candidates? Renee is very knowledgeable of the laws that govern municipalities and, having been an alderman for 8 years, she knows the town business. She stood up to and fought against the illegal practices of the previous administration and thanks to her efforts, these illegal practices were prosecuted. I would suspect that you don’t know Renee and you are not sufficiently informed to speak on her attitude or character. As such, I might also suggest that you keep your opinion to yourself in regard to the aptitude and attitude of others.

        • Anonymous Says:

I also agree with the oldman,he has as much right as you about his opinion of Renee.I also don’t think she would make a good mayor. She has made a fairly good alderman and she should have stayed on as alderman and not run for the mayors office.

          • Anonymous Says:

…And neither can you predict who is the best candidate for the mayor of Jonesboro. I believe that all of the candidates can provide good leadership for the town of Jonesboro. My point is that so many people in this blog tend to be critical of others and base personal perspectives and criticism on assumptions that can neither be verified nor supported.

            • Anonymous Says:

Give or take that Stringer tried to line herself up a good mayoral salary a few months back when part of the issue with Thompson was the whole raise in salary scandal which she had an issue with a higher salary till it looked like it might go into her own pocket, then it was a different ballgame. You people have short memories.

        • Anonymous Says:

Mike Holder for Mayor, the best choice.

      • Fair and Balanced Says:

        Fair and Balanced

Exciting times are ahead for the Town of Jonesboro. Candidates for Mayor, some door-to-door, are telling their visions for future growth and financial stability for our town. With our past, which has made negative headlines From Sea to Shining Sea, it’s about time that we see positive change on the horizon.

There are 4 candidates for Mayor; two of them won’t make the runoff. I think The Jet, in his comment above, is basically correct in his prediction about the general election, however, I predict that Ms. Stringer will net a few less than predicted, and that Mr. Jones will get a few more. As for who wins the General Election, that’s a more difficult prediction.

So that leaves Mr. Bradford and Mr. Holder in the runoff. Obviously, one of these gentlemen is White; the other is African American. But this election does not have to be about skin color. It can be about what political races should be about: positive vision for the future.

Mr. Bradford is well educated; he has contacts in Baton Rouge, Washington, DC, and in many other places, as well. Mr Holder is a lifelong businessman, grounded in multi-million dollar business experience. Bradford and Holder, each separately, have an wealth of experiences and resources to bring to the table at City Hall. Both have the capacity to be great leaders for our town, to move us out of the darkest days in our Town’s history, to where we need to be to move forward.

Let’s get together about town, white and black, and discuss these two candidates and their potential value to our town’s future. We have a great thing going here. We should make the best of it. If we get this thing right, the credit won’t go to the candidates, but to the people of The Town, as it should.

    • Anonymous Says:

I think you are close on your predictions, except when it comes to Renee. Renee will not receive anymore than 6% of the vote.

One of the town trucks was at the Lincoln and Jackson parish line when I came back from the doctors office Friday evening. My wife was driving and said something about why it was there, about. 2:00 or 2:30 pm.

    • Anonymous Says:

Remember the main topic at hand, which is the myth of RS as avenging angel of all the wrongs on the planet and the SOLE architect of Thompson’s downfall. LOL. But seriously, the town truck might have been going to Ruston for parts? It’s a strange and unclear tale though. Was it stopped or was it crossing the parish line when it was seen, if stopped was someone in it? Were you lying down in the backseat, is that why only your wife saw the truck?

  17. Anonymous Says:

I never said that I didn’t see the truck, I just said that my wife was driving and she said something about it. You need to read things more carefully before you say something that you know nothing about. You sound like one of the old Thompson voters, are you?

    • Anonymous Says:

        • Anonymous Says:

Here I am, I’m the one who questioned your weird little story where wifey driver saw and commented and you’re passing it on secondhand. I’ll answer the question. Not that it’s any of your business, but I can’t stand Thompson, never could, but news flash, he’s no longer in charge of the town so how does my questioning of your weird little story about a town truck (non-observed by you but passed on by you, badly and unclearly and without any kind of context) point anywhere near me supporting a jailbird ex-mayor? My questions were legitimate and intelligent. Why don’t you answer MY questions, brainiac?

          • Anonymous Says:

Why are you so hot and up in the air about me and my wife seeing the town truck out of town? Is it because you would like for me to keep it quite? I was just relaying what we saw and you question me as if I were making it up. Well Buddy back off.

            • Anonymous Says:

Still not answering questions? You wanted your ludicrous question answered and I did. You sound like you’re lying and don’t want to be pressed for further details. I’m a girl, not your buddy and not a town worker or friends or kin with anyone working for the town. Why are you floating extremely vague accusations and insinuations about town trucks? And why quote wifey if you were there? It’s like you’re trying to distance yourself from the lie. By the way, the word is spelled “quiet” in the sense you meant. Though you are “quite” wrong about so much every time you post, I really shouldn’t point out just the one thing. Not hot and up in the air at all, quite happy and calm and enjoying parlay with people who don’t think before they post. You must think everyone is eager to buy your fertilizer. You sound hot and up in the air yourself though.Chill and answer my questions like I answered yours. Or go away.

Anything else bitch, that the name I give girls like you,it sounds like you deserve it. Now answer this question, why are you questioning all this for, were you or someone you like have anything to do with the town vecicle? You are mighty nosey but I guess most women are.

    • Anonymous Says:

Wow, name-calling, classically desperate move of the conversationally cornered. And not content to bash me, you go on and bash the entire female population while you’re at it. But maybe you just base that assessment on your own wife who apparently takes keen notice of all things roadside. You two are a hoot. At least you semi-answered my questions, finally. But you re-ask something I already told you, am not involved with any town worker, don’t know any of them, just thought your story was weird and incomplete and asked some questions. Sorry that made you almost poop your pants.

I’m just sick of the Jonesboro s**t stirrers and will confront anyone who I think is doing that. Sorry you had a bad day. Bad days make us all say stupid stuff. Been there, done that myself, for sure.

Good Lord, yes. Everyone should have to work for the town, for the fire department, for law enforcement, etc., and have to put up with the constant ill-willed scrutiny that never accounts for innocent explanations for anything. There’s a low-level, longtime ‘politician’ in Jonesboro who has for some years got up every day of their miserable existence trying to make life hard and unpleasant for innocent, hardworking, decent, honestly employed people. This person constantly paints themselves as being an agent for the greater good when in reality their whole mission in life is to try to make others miserable and elevate their own status in that way. Sad. Plenty of sensible folks know who and what you are: a selfish, hateful, hypocritical, self-aggrandizing megalomaniac who’s meaner than a snake. And here’s hoping that that you are about to be put out to pasture.

  24. Oldman Says:

With all these people running for Jonesboro offices,it’s mighty quite on here.Come on folks let’s talk about somebody, let’s find out what these people stand for,why they are running, education, back ground, what they have done so far in life, are they qualified, what are
the ideas for bringing the town back, and will they bring jobs in?
We need to pick the best so let’s start asking questions.

    • Anonymous Says:

Will Renee be able to get along with the people she will be dealing with? What are Mike’s ideas for turning our town around? Will James Bradford be able to take care of both sides, black and white without being racist? Questions we need honest answers to.

      • David Says:

Only Bradford knows if he is a racist. I worked with him several years and never saw a decision of his based on racism. He certainly is no stranger to politics. I do think he will have the town’s best interest as his priority.

      • Anonymous Says:

Good questions. But we all know the answer to at least the first one. The decision will be between the merits of Bradford and Holder. Kinda wish they could be co-mayors.

  25. Anonymous Says:

Heard that Don and Lydia Essmeier are moving to Monroe. We owe a tremendous debt to the three men who filed the first (or maybe it was the second) lawsuit against the previous regime.None of them will be living in Jonesboro, one of them is deceased, but had it not been for them, we probably would not have progressed as far or as soon as we did. They endured intimidation, criticism from certain groups, and spent well into five figures in legal fees. A portion of that was donated, but we will never be able to pay these men and their families for what they endured to bring us where we are today. It is up to us to vote for the individuals running for mayor and council members who can continue this forward progress. Let’s have a large percentage of citizens voting this time around, so we won’t have to look back and say, “If I had just voted, my vote may have made the difference.”

  26. Oldman Says:

I hate to see Don leaving Jonesboro,he is one of the most fair and one of the most honest men I have ever known. One thing he couldn’t stand was for you to lie to him,you were fair game then. We’ll miss you don and wife,we’ll miss you a lot.

  27. Anonymous Says:

I agree with the two previous messages concerning Don Essmeier. Some didn’t like him because he said what he thought, and maybe that was the reason he lost his last election. Lots of people don’t want to hear the truth, especially if it is about them.

  28. Anonymous Says:

I too think the mayoral race will be between Holder and Bradford. Either one has the ability to do a good job, but the key is who are elected as council members to work with them. A mayor can do little if the next council doesn’t do any more than the present council has. Probably the most important position being voted on is the Alderman at Large, the swing vote in a 3-2 decision.

    • Anonymous Says:

I disagree. The At Large Alderman is an important position. However, the others are just as important. You have qualified people in each of the four districts and you have those who are just running because they were put up to do so. Please, in all offices in the coming election, consider the qualifications, past history, and reason the individual is running, when it comes time to select your choice. But, please go vote. Select the one who can help our town the most and can work with the other members and mayor in the town races.

  29. Anonymous Says:

Essmeier … always kind of a jerk, don’t see him as much else. He spoke his mind, yes, but didn’t think much of his mind.

    • Oldman Says:

    • Anonymous Says:

I have to rethink that now if he indeed has a sign for that in his yard!

  31. Anonymous Says:

    1 Mike Holder first choice
    2.James Bradford second choice
    3.Renee Stringer third choice
Either one of the first two would make a good mayor.
We have got to get it right this time,I don’t think it’s too late yet.
If we could elect Mike Holder and James Bradford both, then we would have it twice as good.

  32. Anonymous Says:

Renee ought to know my now she can’t win,she needs to do the right thing, drop out and let mike have her votes. I think the town would be better off if she did that.

    • David Says:

sorry assed racist – how do you know that ALL of her votes will go to Mike? True enough, all of her votes will be from white folks, but some of those folks just may go the other way –

  33. Anonymous Says:

David do not call me a sorry assed racist, this white boy ain’t going to stand for that.Everybody get behind someone that can win and then we will have a chance to have a good Mayor.Mike Holder comes to mind, with rs’s votes going to Mike, Jonesboro stands a chance. Not being a racist and telling the truth you know Blacks will stand behind one Black,so if the Whites stand together we may have a chance.rS does have a snow balls chance in hell on winning, all she will be doing is splitting the white vote .Now don’t get me wrong,I think James Bradford would make a good Mayor, but it’s time for another White Mayor to even things out.
    No.1 Mike Holder
    No.2 James Bradford
    No. 3 Renee Stringer
That’s the way i see it.With Renee’s few votes going to Mike,he can go in first time around,no runoff.
You know I’m right. Get out and vote and then you’ll have a say so in our town.

    • David Says:

your whole statement smacks of racism – until you can speak or write a comment without having to distinguish between black and white, you are a friggin racist – one should vote for whom they consider the best candidate – one thing I do agree with, is renee is not the best for this town – To vote for Bradford because he is black or to vote for holder because he is white – nothing but pure, sorry assed racists – compare their records and vote for the one whom you think will do the best for this community

  34. Anonymous Says:

David,do you not agree that a “black” will vote for another “black” before he would vote “white”? The “black” candidate can be a sorry son of a gun,but the “black” will still vote “black” no matter what.Sonny boy if that makes me a racist,so be it. Just go back and look at the last Mayor election, they knew Leslie was a thief and they still voted for him because of that.I know the word “racist” is a bad word to call anybody, but I’m getting tired of all the “whites” being called a “racist” and the “blacks” saying they are not.Just who do you think are the biggest “racist” out there?

    • David Says:

Certainly not a racist – and I think I said, if one votes for someone because race, one is a racist (black, white or any other color) – say or deny what you want, but you are a racist – every time you print a sentence you reinforce it – holder is a good man, Bradford is a good man – compare their experience and vote for the best qualified – not the lightest skin – you know, you’re not even worthy of being called a redneck – you are just racist trash –

  35. Anonymous Says:

It all boils down to what you want.Seventy five percent of the blacks that have been elected to office have been in trouble with the law for one reason or the other. What makes you think this one is different?Look at our president among others.Look at mayor Leslie ,the black council went along because they were black no other reason. The last election how many blacks voted for Leslie knowing he was a crook. How many whites voted for Leslie knowing he was a crook? The people found out he was a crook during the first election and that is the reason he did not get any more white votes. The whites main fault is not getting out the vote. The reason James Bradford got as far as he did was because he was black, the company had to show they were moving blacks up.I have no problem with blacks,I just don’t like them being moved to the front because they are black not because they have a better education and are smarter.Look at our schools and the shape they are in.The students today could not pass a test that was put out 40or50 years ago, why? I’ll let you answer that. The blacks have that gimme attitude and until that changes nothing will change. Have a good day

    • David Says:

you got your numbers the same place most trash racists do, out of the thin air – have you ever been out of Jackson parish? I do agree that this is one of the most racist places I have ever seen – and it’s attitudes like your’s that keep it this way – you are probably one of those that complain about how bad blacks are, yet every night you go over on leon and lay your money down!

  36. Anonymous Says:

You must be black, married to a black, must have black son in law,or a black grand baby.I have no problem with blacks that work hard, raise a family and amount to something.I have put about six young blacks in good jobs, only one made something out of him self. The parents are sorry when it comes to raising their kids,so what do you expect. No education, how are they going to make it.The parents have this gimme attitude,so they pass it on to their kids. The govt is not going to keep on feeding them.the sorry white people are no better, want every thing given to them. Also no education, live for today, don’t worry about tomorrow.Govt running out of money who’s going to feed these sorry people,I’m not. There’s going to be a great big culling one of these days and it ain’t going to be pretty. These people don’t have a penny saved for a rainy day,so what’s going to happen if they lose food stamp card.So I guess that’s the reason I feel like I do.People wake up before it’s too late

i am as irish as one can be – no special love for blacks or any other color group – just treat all the same – my dislike for one is not based on color – it’s based on character, which is pretty easy to read with some – unless you have something worthwhile saying, stfu and go vote your choice on election day – make sure some one is in the booth with you so you are sure to punch the right one – if a black votes before you, make sure the voting booth is cleansed so you nothing will rub off on you – maybe we can try spraying em with bleach and tha’s turn white- you trashy piece of dung

    No.1 Mike. Holder
    No.2 Renee Stringer
    No.3 James what’s his name?
    No.3 Kim Jones
Kim Jones and James Bradford tied for third place
Just might be a run off between Holder and Stringer
    With Holder being Mayor
    Happy days are here again

  38. Let God direct us in ALL we do Says:

I want to know if any of you people have heard from God concerning this election? Have you even asked God for direction and discernment? Or are you people just supporting your own agendas and mind-sets? You all can’t even have an intelligent conversation without calling each other names and cursing one another. God is not in that mess! Get on your knees, ask for the Lord’s direction to choose the candidate HE has chosen to lead the town with righteousness; then, come back on this site and tell us what thus says the Lord to you. Have a blessed day and may the Lord open the eyes of your hearts so you can see Him clearly.

what are his requirements? if it’s being a good Christian person, what if there is more than one? with all the Christians in town, are they all going to get the same response? they should, if it’s god they are talking with!. did god tell everyone to vote for leslie? did leslie defy god when he got into office? if god has already chosen someone to lead this town, does he know the outcome before it starts? if so why bother to vote?
