Rosalind Jones Appointed to Ruston City Council

On a 3-1 vote, Rosalind Jones was appointed as District Two’s representative on the Ruston Board of Aldermen at a special called meeting of the board earlier this morning. She will fill the unexpired term of the late Elmore Mayfied, who died last month. That term will expire at the end of the year, as elections are scheduled for later this year for both Mayor and Council.

Voting for Jones was Jedd Lewis (District 3), Jim Pearce (District 4), and Marie Riggs (District 5). Lewis nominated Jones.

Also nominated for the position by Glenda Howard (District 1) was Mayfield’s daughter, Angela Mayfield Spiller. She received but one vote, that of Howard.

Several people spoke on behalf of Spiller, including her pastor and two of Elmore Mayfield’s brothers. All said she was knowledgeable about her late father’s public service, and that it was customary to appoint a family member whenever an officeholder died before his term was up.

But Jones is no stranger to public service either, having served for many years as the Executive Director of Humanitarian Enterprises of Lincoln Parish (H. E. L. P.).
