Gibsland mayor arrested for malfeasance

Mayor Odell Key accused of numerous violations of state law

Written by Vickie Welborn

GIBSLAND — An investigation that’s been ongoing for more than a year in the financially-troubled town of Gibsland took a turn today with the arrest of Mayor Odell Key.

Key, 73, surrendered to Bienville Parish sheriff’s investigators shortly before noon and was booked into the Bienville Parish Jail on five counts of malfeasance in office. Bond is set at $50,000.

Investigators have attempted for weeks to question Key about discrepancies in the town’s finances. However, he failed to show up for interviews.

The decision was made to serve the arrest warrants rather than wait for a grand jury to hear evidence uncovered since the probe began in June 2012.

Bienville Parish Sheriff John Ballance said the investigation was “long and drawn out,” mostly because of all of the agencies involved and the coordination it took gathering information needed to pursue the appropriate charges.

Kudos to Bienville Parish Sheriff on another mayor gone wild!

So, if I win an election and become a town’s mayor, I can take the taxpayer money and spend it as if it were my own?

It appears that an enterprising federal prosecutor could make quite a name for themselves looking into the finances of North Louisiana towns with black mayors!

Do you really think this is limited to just North Louisiana towns with black mayors?????

Does he have a wife that can be appointed Mayor?

  6. Anonymous Says:

I don’t think they will try that after yoshi was the laughing stock of Louisiana

From all accounts, Thompson’s lawyer was responsible for getting a Monroe judge to do the swearing in, without taking the obvious first step of telling her that the fiscal administrator had already vetoed it according to state law. Surely the Gibsland mayor’s legal counsel will know better than to try anything like that.

The Gibsland town council members probably would not allow it anyway, because they saw that made the Jonesboro council members that voted for Yoshi guilty of usurpation. That charge has yet to be made and brought to court, but it threw up a red flag that others probably won’t try it.

    Where is Leslie vacationing?

Mayor Thompson is at the David Wade Correctional Center in Homer, LA.

You may visit on the weekends…..if he has your name on his list of guest.

      He will be home soon….

And, just why do you think that?

That would be a good headline. No justification given for this startling statement. Maybe the writer meant that he would be home for a short time before going back. Or maybe he or she just doesn’t know what they are talking about. Get some wild things on here sometimes. Oh well, that’s what keeps it interesting. Happy New Year to all.

Never did hear why Thompson was transferred from Jonesboro to Baton Rouge, then to Homer. Heard a lot of stories about it, but none confirmed that I know of.

  13. Anonymous Says:

And why was it kept a dark secret for so long. Here is a story that was the headlines in all area newspapers for weeks, then suddenly he is transferred twice (supposedly) and no mention about it in any newspaper (except this one, and that by correspondents).

  14. Anonymous Says:

So he was never in a Baton Rouge facility?

I don’t think “guest” is the right word for an inmate. Makes it It may sound like they are invited rather than forced to come. My be OKI for those who visit him.
