Taxes on Jackson Parish Ballot Saturday

In addition to voting their choice for a congressman, Jackson Parish voters will get to decide Saturday whether to re-impose a 7.7 mil property tax for the operation and maintenance of the parish schools.

See here the ballot language.

Shall Consolidated School District No. 1 of the Parish of Jackson, State of Louisiana (the “District”), continue to levy a seven and seven-tenths (7.7) mills tax on all property subject to taxation in said District (an estimated $1,838,000 reasonably expected at this time to be collected from the levy of the tax for an entire year), for a period of ten (10) years, beginning with the year 2014 and ending with the year 2023, for the purpose of maintaining and operating school houses in the District?

Thanks for the information. I hadn’t seen it mentioned in the local paper at all. We tend to favor passage of continuing taxes for such things as schools, roads, hospitals, etc., so this will be an easy choice. Fourteen candidates to choose from is a whole different story; especially since five or six could swap campaign ads with only a name change.

I really do not understand why taxpayers “PAY” school board members. In most communities outside Louisiana, school board members as well as city council members are not paid, Serving on the boards is an honor and is just one method “True Leaders” give back to their community. I watched the town mayor thing and his outrageous salary and a town car thing. What the heck? I live in a town of 140,000 folks. The mayor gets paid $25/month. Council members nothing. School board members….zero and the only perk is free football tickets.

So this begs the question to the taxpayers of Jackson parish and the town of Jonesboro. Why do you spend your hard earned dollars on such foolish things? True leaders will step up to the plate without being paid.

True “leaders” do serve. They don’t just show up when its time for a vote. They don’t turn their back on their town because they lose an election and they certainly don’t align themselves with and contribute to fraud and waste by public officials. Free service indeed, we must have that and also remember to register illegal aliens and pay payroll taxes too.

What town do you live in?

  3. Anonymous Says:

The people in Louisiana pay our politicians because after a little while in office the real person comes out and nobody else will hire them.

I have lived in other states and I have never found one where the mayor and council weren’t paid. Not so sure the info is accurate; but, we will see if the town name is offered or not so the research can be done.

you won’t find it. it is one of your local’s that is going to run for office and use the “working for free” slogan in their campaign.
don’t waste your time looking for that.
