Hrncir Sees Research as Aid to Teaching

Duane Hrncir, Interim President of the South Dakota School of Mines & Technology (Mines) said this afternoon that he sees research as a valuable tool in teaching, and would like to see most all undergraduate students either involved in research programs or working as interns with prospective employers.

Responding to a question from the committee on the roles of research and teaching in higher education, Hrncir said, “The best way to learn engineering and science, which are the disciplines on our campus right now, are by doing them.”

Hrncir was interviewed this afternoon by a search committee of the University of Louisiana System (ULS), which met today on the Louisiana Tech University (LTU) campus in Ruston. The committee will recommend a candidate for president of the university at a 10 AM meeting tomorrow.

The ULS’ Board of Supervisors will consider the committee’s recommendation at a December meeting.

This morning, the committee interviewed the other finalist for the job, Tech VP for Research & Development Les Guice.

Hrncir also said he would attempt to “project the right image” for the university in dealings with the public and with the state’s political leaders.

Asked what he would do first if selected for the job, Hrncir said he would spend time getting to know and seeking input from the faculty, staff, and students.
