St. Helena Committee to Work on Plan

The St. Helena School Board is going to try and come up with some ideas without trying to pass a massive tax increase.

St. Helena board to form school panel

The St. Helena School Board agreed during a special meeting Thursday night to form a parishwide committee to find solutions to the district’s old and deteriorating buildings, low teacher salaries and students’ lagging test scores.

The decision to form a committee followed a lengthy discussion with bond attorney Alan Offner, of the Foley and Judell firm in New Orleans, on calling elections for a 55-mill property tax to fund teacher pay increases and a $20 million, 25-year bond issue to finance construction of new school buildings.

Offner told the board that without a federal court order, it was too late to get the two tax propositions on the Nov. 2 election ballot.
