Town Atty, Jonesboro Mayor Have Campaign Ties

Town Attorney and Second Judicial (Bienville, Claiborne, Jackson Parishes) Assistant District Attorney Douglas L. Stokes and controversial Jonesboro Mayor Leslie Thompson have had campaign transactions in a prior election for Judge the the 2nd JD. Stokes paid Thompson nearly $20 thousand during the 2000 campaign for “consulting fees.”

During the 10/04/99-02/03/00 reporting period, Stokes paid Thompson $10 thousand.

During the 02/04/00-03/26/00 reporting period, Stokes paid him $2.5 thousand.

During the 02/24/00-03/26/00 reporting period, Thomson received $7 thousand thousand from Stokes.

As Jonesboro’s Town Attorney, Stokes usually attends Board of Aldermen meetings and frequently rules on legal issues that come up during the meeting.

Lincoln Parish News Online has posted several news stories on Jonesboro issues in the past week. See the archive here.

The above is not accurate. He only attends when the Board votes and requests his presence or if the Mayor invites him. An individual Council member request is not sufficient to have him attend the Council meetings.

Maybe you should check your facts or ask the people involved. It might just be that Mr. Stokes did not make a contribution but a loan. Just FYI.

We stand behind our news reporting.

Click on the links and you will see copies of the official documents on file with the Louisiana Ethics Administration’s Supervisory Committee on Campaign Finance that candidates for public office are required by law to file.

They clearly show the amounts paid to Leslie Thompson by the Stokes campaign.

If the money was a loan, that information also requires disclosure. We find no such disclosure anywhere in Stokes’ reports.

Here is the link to all of Stokes’ reports if you should like to look for yourself.

  4. heard it but still don't believe it Says:

I don’t want to lose my respect for Doug Stokes. Up to now, I have nothing but total trust in him. However, at the last Town Council Meeting when Mr. Stokes was present, he was not very informative about the questions that were asked of him. I hope he has gone to his office and “looked up” answers so that he can be more informative and helpful in the future. I have just begun to attend council meetings regularly and this past Tuesday night was the first time I have seen Mr. Stokes there. I would hope that Mr. Stokes and Mr. Thompson are not allies in the “taking down” of our town.
