OPNO: ULM Paper Faculty Advisor Fired

Dr. J. Eric McNeil, Assistant Professor and Director of Student Publications for The University of Louisiana at Monroe (ULM) has been fired, Ouachita Parish News Online (OPNO) is reporting. The student newspaper, The Hawkeye, has been embroiled in controversy recently.

OPNO had reported last month that the newspaper had spiked a story about the university’s settlement of a lawsuit with former President Dwight Vines and Professor Van McGraw.

Lincoln Parish News Online interviewed the Executive Editor, Managing Editor and the Faculty Adviser about the issue. All three denied that they were pressured by the administration to kill that or any other story. They did admit to working on a story on the issue, which is yet to be published.

Last week, student journalist Joseph Roberts’ name was removed from the staff section of the newspaper’s masthead. Two weeks earlier he had penned a signed editorial sharply critical of ULM President James Cofer’s handling of budget cuts.
