School Board Committees Meet on RHS Addition

The Building and Grounds and Finance Committees of the Lincoln Parish School Board meet at noon today at Ruston High School to discuss a 20 thousand square foot classroom addition at that school. The addition would eliminate several portable classroom buildings now in use and would also serve STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) classes, dual enrollment classes and the New Tech instructional model.

Presentations were made by RHS Principal Mike Milstead and Architect Mike Walpole describing preliminary plans and how the building would be utilized. As described, the construction would be a two-story building located on the west side of the campus between the Vo-Tech/Ag building and newer classrooms just west of the Girl’s Gym. Very preliminary cost estimates are between 3 and 3 1/2 million dollars, not including furnishings, according to Walpole. Eight double-size and six regular size classrooms would be located in the building.

According to Business Manager George Murphy, about $3.3 million in the Capital Construction Fund is not otherwise committed and available for construction.

District Seven Board Member Trott Hunt had several questions, beginning with how well the existing classrooms were being utilized. He also asked about the possibility of extended class days and extended school years. Hunt also wanted to know how many additional teachers would be required and how much increase in recurring costs for personnel and utilities could be expected.

The committees agreed to bring the plan up again at the January Board meeting and asked the staff to present numbers on the operating costs at that time.
