Higher Ed Board to Meet at Luxury Casino Resort

The University of Louisiana System Board of Supervisors is scheduled to meet this Thursday and Friday at the luxury Paragon Casino Resort in Marksville, LA, owned by the Tunica-Biloxi Tribe of Louisiana. The ‘Board Orientation’ meeting begins at 3:00 pm Thursday in the Chiqui Two Ballroom and will last until 5:30 pm. The Friday session goes from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm with a 1 1/2 hour lunch break.

All during the 2009 Regular Legislative Session, we heard whining and moaning about how Louisiana’s Higher Ed community was living hand-to-mouth. Newspaper editorials chimed in regularly. Particularly noisy was Gannett’s (Monroe) News-Star whose two top editors, Kathy Spurlock and Ken Stickney have spouses that are on the Higher Ed payroll.

Dr. Randy Moffett, the $375,000/year President of the ULS System was all over the newspapers about how budget cuts would be “drastic” for the UL system.

We heard from just about all the Higher Ed Bigs, from Louisiana Tech’s Dan Reneau ($350,000/yr) to ULM’s James Cofer ($252,886/yr) to LSU’s John Lombardi ($550,000/yr).

Nor are any of the University Presidents expected to live in substandard housing. ULM’s President lives here. La Tech’s President lives here. ULL’s President lives here. And the President of Northwestern State University in Natchitoches lives here.

Yet the Taxpayers of Louisiana are expected to sit still and pay for these deadheads to meet at a luxury resort. It isn’t as if there’s nowhere else for them to get together. Alexandria has a State Office Building that likely has ample conference rooms. And then there is LSUA’s Student Center with catering available. And both facilities have already been paid for.

Lincoln Parish News Online will be filing a public records request first thing Monday morning with ULS General Counsel Kay Kirkpatrick to see how much we are paying for this ‘board orientation’ and what will be the agenda.
