So just who is Monroe City Court judge Tammy Lee, the individual who last Friday morning administered an “oath of office” to Yohsi Thompson (wife of former mayor Leslie Thompson) in the parking lot of the W. Richard Zuber City Hall in Jonesboro?
She was first elected in late 2000, replacing Larry Jefferson, who had been removed from office by the Louisiana Supreme Court, and has served continuously since.
After a complaint by another judge, the Louisiana Legislative Auditor (LLA) investigated, then published an August, 2004 report on the Monroe City Court. Among the findings, most of which involved Lee:
Unauthorized use of court credit card
Untimely filing of expense reports
Unauthorized use of rental cars for travel
See here the 8/25/04 audit.
Subsequent to that report the Louisiana Supreme Court (LASC) initiated judicial disciplinary proceedings against Lee. In the report of the investigation, Lee admitted:
that between January 1, 2001, and December 31, 2003, she went on 28 court-related business trips. For nineteen of the 28 trips at issue, Judge Lee owed the court money upon her return because the total amounts advanced to her, prepaid by the court, or charged to the court’s credit card exceeded the total amount of reimbursable expenses incurred on the trip. For twelve of these nineteen trips, Judge Lee failed to file an expense report and to repay the court for advanced travel costs until after the end of the fiscal year in which the travel had occurred. For one of these trips, Judge Lee failed to repay the court for advanced travel costs and to file an expense report for more than 660 days after she returned from the trip.
See here the 7/6/06 LASC opinion.
Lee was suspended without pay from her judicial office for 120 days.
And finally, The Ouachita Citizen reported on 1/28/09 that Lee:
owes the Internal Revenue Service more than $75,000 in unpaid income taxes, according to a lien filed by the Internal Revenue Service.
The IRS filed the lien last week at the Ouachita Parish Courthouse.
Lee owes unpaid taxes for five years beginning in 2000 and ending in 2004. The unpaid taxes total some $77,884 after Lee underreported income on her 1040-A federal tax filings, according to the lien.
And that’s who is Tammy Lee.
