Well, at least he’ll hopefully have a criminal trial now.

Walter, would you review for us again the definition of malfeasance in public office in Louisiana and the range of penalties if found guilty?

  3. Anonymous Says:

Can the mayor and council force the Town of Jonesboro and its taxpayers to pay for the defense of these charges, or is it incumbent upon the individual or individuals to so so?

  4. Anonymous Says:

    Who put up the bond?

I will bet you a dollar to a donut that IF this DA even brings the case to trail, he will get off with maybe a LITTLE fine and not even lose his job

  6. Anonymous Says:

The district attorney should recuse himself because of his public comments about not finding anything illegal in the original charges.

  7. Unlnown Says:

He won’t get off free if the judge can help it , maybe the state needs to check out the da office also .

KNOE gets the intital prize, their coverage was much more extensive than KTVE, including an interview with Sheriff Andy Brown. However, Channel 10 did lead off with the headline, saying there would be more on the 6 p.m. news.

If the mayor tries to use Town of Jonesboro money for his personal defense, he will probably get a fourth charge of malfeasance.

  10. Anonymous Says:

If found guilty, no, he will not be able to retain the seat as mayor. But I can guarantee you that this drags out til well after this term is over, a year and a half from now!

Former President Theodore Roosevelt had a saying in the 30′s that would seem to apply to Thompson here: “If you could kick the person in the pants responsible for most of your trouble, you wouldn’t sit for a month.”

Theodore Roosevelt had been dead for 11 years in 1930 .

So, his words live on even today……..and it’s 2013.

        • A-NON-A-MOUSE Says:

No one on this side of the keyboard disagreed with the comment about Teddy Roosevelt, just the time of the quote. The Theodore Roosevelt quote that I find most appropriate is “No man is above the law and no man is below it; nor do we ask any man’s permission when we ask him to obey it.” Leslie Thompson should have been made aware of this a long time ago. Now he can claim that he was the 1st black mayor of Jonesboro (and all the trouble he has faced is because the racist in town don’t like him) and that he was the first Jonesboro mayor ever arrested (and he will attach a racist note to this also). Unfortunately, by the time he is tried and convicted his term as mayor will have expired.

A vote is like a rifle, it’s usefulness depends upon the character of the user. Theodore Roosevelt. A vote has been the hinge that has kept the most recent action from occuring. There have been countless warnings, more than adequate opportunties have been provided and those among all the other tools that were provided were blatantly refused. The one that screams racism the loudest is the most guilty of the offense. The empty vessel makes the loudest sound. William Shakespeare.

Innumerable quotes can be utilized to describe the current situation, but unfortunately they won’t heal a town that is wracked with debt, racial discord and the most horrendous of all atrocities- a political system that malfunctioned and like a malignant tumor left untreated has been allowed to metastasize into the “vote machine”. The blame lies not only at the feet of one but of countless others that contributed directly and indirectly from Baton Rouge to Allen Ave.

What a sad day for such a wonderful town and how sad a lot that would alllow such a thing to continue on just because cumlatively and seperately they didn’t want to lose a vote. One would have to wonder just how comforting to the conscience a hollow action could be when the action to prevent this was forsaken for the sake of the next term in office.

We might not have solved any problems or answered any questions but we certainly got the Teddy Roosevelt quotes going. Haven’t thought about the Rough Rider since I was at Mount Rushmore last year.

Will this trial require a jury be selected, or will it be ruled on by a district judge?
