Today’s Jonesboro Council Meeting

A local businessman’s $6 thousand 2012 property tax payment check has apparently gone missing, Town of Jonesboro’s District B Alderwoman Renee Stringer said at today’s Noon special called meeting of the town’s Board of Aldermen.

Said Stringer, “I got a call yesterday evening from a business in town that came and paid their taxes around January 3rd, and they paid over $6 thousand. They received a call from one of your (mayor Thompson’s) employees, and asked that – this was later in the month – and they said they had mailed his check back to him, and that if he would, when he received his check back, to call, and they would come get it and pick it back up and apply it toward his taxes.”

Stringer went on, “Once that call was received, he tried to contact you (Thompson) – he’s tried repeatedly, he can’t get through to you. The check’s never gone back through his bank. He’s never gotten the check back in the mail.”

For his part, Thompson denied knowing about the issue.

Said Thompson, “I haven’t heard anything about it, but I’ll…”

Stringer asked the mayor to do what he could, because, “a $6 thousand check floating around is a problem.”

Additional reporting tomorrow.

At least the check hasn’t been cashed yet. Or did I read that wrong. But still, why would they mail a check back. Receiving a $6k check… that’s a big chunk of money!

    Wo

Something smells fishy! If the businessman owed the taxes, there was no reason to mail it back to him.

did the businessman get a reciept for his taxes or was he going to use canceled check as proof? for me, i would want something showing i had paid my taxes.

Never pay the TOJ anything without a reciept. If someone tells you something get it on paper with their signature.

They are so crooked and/or incompetant that you have to do that!

Questions, questions, but no answers? Why would the check be mailed back to him? Why would the mayor not know about it if his employees knew about it? Just like everything that goes wrong, “nobody knows nothing about it.”

Sounds like the mayor is borrowing Dill’s statement on videotape under oath in the fiscal review committee hearing before he was appointed city clerk to oversee the money: “I don’t know nothing about no money.”

    Sounds like he still doesn’t.

This is a smoke screen to cover up the fact that they lost the check right there in the city hall bldg. They say they sent it back so that it won’t be their fault that the check was actually lost. More things will come up lost if these idiots are not removed.

So that’s why they closed yesterday…maybe they were crawling around looking for it! It’s just pitiful!

Ok ask yourself this. When will you people that didn’t go vote, vote him out. What is it going to take for y’all to wake up.
