With the issue of juror pay on tonight’s agenda of the Jackson Parish Police Jury (JPPJ), we did some research to come up with what the jurors are paid in some other area parishes. Here’s what we found.
In Lincoln Parish, with a population of about 46 thousand, eleven of the twelve jurors are paid $875/month, with the president at $975/month.
See here the 2011 audit, page 56.
In Ouachita Parish (population 146 thousand), the seven jurors are paid $1,200/month, with the president’s pay the same as all the other jurors.
See here the 2011 audit, page 104.
Winn Parish (population 17 thousand, seven members) pays their jurors $900/month with the president getting $1,000/month.
See here the 2011 audit, page 39.
As of the end of 2011, Natchitoches (population 40 thousand) and Caldwell Parishes (population 10 thousand) paid jurors $800/month, with the president getting $100/month more. Caldwell has seven jurors, while Natchitoches has eleven.
Caldwell jurors voted themselves a $200/month raise (to $1 thousand/month) in January, 2012.
See here the Caldwell Parish 2011 audit, page 40.
See here the Natchitoches Parish 2011 audit, page 53.
Union (population 23 thousand, with 10 jurors) and Claiborne (population 17 thousand, 10 jurors) taxpayers get a bargain – their jurors are paid $600/month with the president at $700/month.
See here the Union Parish 2011 audit, page 50.
See here the Claiborne Parish 2011 audit, page 43.
However, Bienville Parish’s (population 14,300) seven-member jury is apparently high maintenance. Six are paid $1,600/month, with the president’s pay at $2,000/month.
See here the 2011 audit, page 44.
Jackson Parish’s jurors are now paid $1,200/month, with the president’s pay set at $1,350/month.
Jackson Parish has a population of about 16 thousand, and has a seven-member jury.
The resolution calling for a public hearing on the pay raise does not specify an amount, but the maximum pay is set by state law. LA RS 33:1233(A)(2)(b)(ii) says:
No police juror shall be compensated for more than twelve meetings per month, or, in lieu of such per diem, the police jury may elect, by a vote of a majority of the elected members, to be paid on a salary basis, in which event the maximum salary allowable shall be one thousand six hundred dollars per month for each member of the police jury. A police jury may provide for an increase in the salary of the police juror serving as president of the police jury in an amount not to exceed four hundred dollars per month more than the salary established for members of the police jury. Such additional salary shall only be payable while a police juror is holding the position of president of the police jury.

So, we are trying to be like Bienville and max things out? I guess their taxpayers don’t care if they are getting screwed. Kudos to those in other parishes who realize it is all about serving and not making a living off of us.

Absolutely! Greed done awry in Jackson Parish. Always has been, always will be, I suppose. Shame on them to set their pay higher than those parishes that are very large in population.
Shame on Bienville Parish, too! Hopefully, some of their citizens that read these blogs on LPNO will see Walter’s article and get the word out that Bienville Parish Police Jury is pricey in salaries. Declare war on your PJ before they increase their salaries again.

Oops! Should be “greed gone awry”. Sorry.

Not to agree with Bienville, but they do/did have a tremendous income from the gas/oil industry. They are building a courthouse and Arcadia (at least) appears to be growing. Can’t say the same for Jackson.

The good news for Bienville is that is the maximum monthly allotment for Police Jurors allowed by law or I am sure they would have given themselves even more.
So, because oil and gas companies wanted to lease the land, somehow the Police Jury deserves more money? Really? I guess that is called spreading the wealth. Use the money to help the public.
Maybe if elected officials were only reimbursed gas and any true out of pocket expenses these clowns who continue to run would stop running. I would be glad if they would clock in and we paid them minimum wage….I would bet we might be lucky to get 20 hours out of them in an entire month if that much.

As natural gas prices fall and no new drilling activity in Jackson Parish we might should hang on to all the revenue we can.To quote Fannin “the hay ride is over” and the State doesn’t have any money to bail us out. With the failure of leadership in the town of “JERKBORO” and with the parish TAX PAYERS paying out money to Police the town who knows how long what revenue we have will last.I guess i am just sick of “TAX AND SPEND” Back to work now so i can “PAY MORE TAXES”…Not HAPPY…HAPPY…HAPPY!!!!

Ouachita Parish only has 6 jurors, population of 154,000, each juror representing close to 26,000 citizens.
