OPPJ To Trim Millage Rates

The Ouachita Parish Police Jury (OPPJ) is set to trim property tax millage rates slightly at their Tuesday night meeting, according to an ordinance that will be introduced at the meeting.

The panel will meet Tuesday, September 4, Ouachita parish courthouse, second floor. The meeting starts at 5:30 PM.

See here the agenda.

The millage adjustment is constitutionally required every four years after the tax assessor reappraises properties in each parish. This is commonly called the “roll forward/roll” back provision. If the tax rates are “rolled forward” so as to increase taxes, the vote must be by a 2/3 vote of the body.

Bottom line, the OPPJ will still collect about the same revenue as last year, but the tax rates will be lower to offset higher property assessments.

The ordinance and the rates are listed in the agenda. Compare to the rates set for tax year 2011.

Also, the Finance Committee will meet after the regular jury meeting to begin discussions on next years budget.
