During yesterday’s testimony during the trial in the matter of the State of Louisiana v Town of Jonesboro, the just released financial report for the fiscal year 7/1/2010 – 6/30/2011 was discussed.
One part of that report compiled by J. Walker & Company of Lake Charles referenced the ability of the town to remain a “going concern,” and was noted on page 43, note 16.
Increasing demands upon the cash flow of the town have caused the withdrawal of fund reserves to meet ongoing expenditures. Revenue increases would be modest at best therefore expend1tme reduction is critical for the town to continue as a going concern.
See here two of the things the town’s controversial mayor Leslie Thompson suggests as a cure for its financial woes.
Consideration of public vote on a ded1cated tax for the fire department
Rate increases for water, sewer and garbage collection fees as appropriate.
See here the document.

anything and everything to allow him to keep all thugs, thieves and drug distributors on duty so they in turn can continue to provide a means by which to accommodate the periphery that needs town equipment, supplies and most importantly their (free ride). best analogy- a big fat leech that has been allowed to suck the town dry and now an infusion of more fresh blood(taxes) at the hands of the taxpayer. idot, plain and simple.

All these proposed hikes in taxes and bills bur z fiscal admin. would be an “unjust burden on the taxpayers”!??! The level of ignorance is beyond words!!

Pray after todays court that the mayor looses all his power!

Does he honestly think that the citizens would vote for a tax to help line his pockets?
07/17/2012 at 9:23 am |
It would more than likely pass. You have to remember this would be for only people living in the city limits. Ol Les would tell all his followers to vote for it and they would, because either they dont pay taxes or because he would hook them up like he does now.

Exactly. As far as rate increases he suggests, we all can see that only a very few people would be burdened with the extra tax. He would hand pick those that would not have to pay anything. Just like the water bill mess. Remember there are those that have not paid their bill in several years. Incompetence at its worst.
I can see him now. Get the city tax roll out. “Let’s see those that I can slide by without them paying ANY taxes.”
He’s a total jerk.

Save some money…trim the fat at the town hall.
Lay offs need to be coming.
Put a GPS tracking device in the town cars….stop burning gas and wearing out the vehicles…make them last and stop the personal use.
Stop using the town hall like it is the mayor’s private meeting place….collect some rents for the use of the building and costs of the utilities.

Something stinks. The mayor testified that the town had $600,000 plus, so there should be no need to raise taxes or increase in utilities!

can anyone not see this picture…….if you have all that money why in the world are you making all those payment arrangements? Pure smoke………..

if Judge Teat rules in favor of appointing someone hopefully it will happen befor les term as mayor is up…i also hope people realize the town wont get turned around over night..its going to take time and hard work.

There should be a public accounting of how much Town of Jonesboro money has been spent on lawyers’ fees, court costs, etc. If that amount was not budgeted for that purpose, what fund is it being taken from? Also, how much is in the new budget for that purpose? This is taxpayers’ money, and they have a right to know.

Totally agree!

The reason Thompson picked the last three items to be increased is because he can get them by a simple majority vote of the town council, which he has in the palm of his hand. The only one that requires a public vote is the fire department, and he is afraid that may not pass. This will free up more money to be put in the budget for other purposes, which he can use for his personal projects. You can count on those three being passed before the fiscal administrator takes over. Whether they can be changed after that is debatable.

The budget can be amended.
