Field House Showcased at Board Meeting

Jimmy “Chick” Childress Field House

Ruston High School’s (RHS) Field House was showcased at last night’s meeting of the Lincoln Parish School Board (LPSB), and was designated as the Jimmy “Chick” Childress Field House.

District 12 Louisiana State Representative Robert “Rob” Shadoin read into the record House Concurrent Resolution 82 (HCR 82) making that designation official, as Childress looked on from the audience.

From the document:

WHEREAS, in order to pay tribute to him for a distinguished career of excellence in coaching and to recognize his momentous contributions, it is appropriate that the Ruston High School field house be named in honor of Jimmy “Chick” Childress.

THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby urge and request the Lincoln Parish School Board to name the Ruston High School field house in honor of Jimmy “Chick” Childress.

Also officially named last night was RHS’ football stadium. It was designated the L. J. “Hoss” Garrett Football Stadium via House Concurrent Resolution 83 (HCR 83), which was also read into the record by Shadoin.

About a dozen of the Garrett family was on hand for the occasion.

From the document:

WHEREAS, in order to pay posthumous tribute to him for a distinguished career of excellence in coaching and to recognize his momentous contributions, it is appropriate that the Ruston High School football stadium be named in honor of the late L.J. “Hoss” Garrett.

THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby urge and request the Lincoln Parish School Board to name the Ruston High School football stadium in honor of the late L.J. “Hoss” Garrett.

At the legislative update part of the board meeting was District 11 State Representative Patrick Jefferson. He and Shadoin reported on this past spring’s legislative session, which saw significant change on the education front.

Jefferson noted that education was faced with challenges, and that those in that field must be up for the challenge.

Said Jefferson, “I don’t know of many people who contended that whatever we had was working.” He added, “We needed to do something. Something bold.” Jefferson also noted that he favored choices for students.

For his part, Shadoin told of an accelerated legislative schedule, with a lot to digest in a short period of time. He said that when he asked questions in a committee meeting, he was summoned to a meeting in the Speaker of the House’s Office, and then later to a meeting with the Governor. In both meetings he was encouraged to help the process along.

Said Shadoin, “The first two weeks, there was a lot of pressure, and there was a lot of advocating.”

Shadoin said that he voted with the governor on two of his education reform bills, and against him on two others.

No thanks to the long-suffering taxpayer? After all, they paid for it: their work and productivity, their willingness to get up every day and trudge to work, and lie still while their paychecks are raped and they pay tax after tax after tax, made it possible.
You better hope Atlas doesn’t shrug anytime soon…
