Cameron Kinte Mays, 26, of Ruston was charged this morning in connection to two home invasions that occurred last week in the Barnett Springs/Cypress Springs area, Ruston Police Department (RPD) Chief Steve Rogers said in a news conference earlier this afternoon.
Mays was charged with first degree murder, aggravated kidnapping, aggravated burglary, unauthorized use of an access card, and unauthorized use of a motor vehicle in connection with the homicide and home invasion of Susan Hashaway, 63, of Ruston.
He was also charged with aggravated rape, aggravated burglary, aggravated kidnapping, armed robbery, unauthorized use of a moveable, and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon in connection with a home invasion on Robert Street.
The crimes occurred early last week, and in both cases the original motive appeared to be robbery, particularly electronics and money, Rogers said.
Mays had been in jail since June 6 on charges of possession of stolen things. Other arrests are expected to be made in connection with the cases, Rogers said.
Said Rogers, “It was a long, extensive investigation,” and noted “we worked around the clock.”
Rogers thanked area law enforcement agencies that helped, including the Lincoln Parish Sheriff’s Office (LPSO), and the Ouachita Parish Sheriff’s Office (OPSO). Rogers said that OPSO was particularly helpful with the crime scene investigation.
Rogers introduced at the news conference RPD Captain Eric Hanna, head of that agency’s investigation division, and lead investigator in the two cases.
