The St. Helena Parish School Board voted 4-2 against extending Superintendent Daisy Slan’s contract expiring June 30 and agreed to advertise for a new superintendent of schools.
Board members said during their meeting Thursday night they hope to find a new superintendent by May 1, even if it means paying overlapping salaries of the departing and the incoming superintendents for a brief period.
Board members Edward Galmon, Linda Chaney, Virginia Bell and Alton Travis voted not to renew Slan’s contract. Board members Willie G. Lee and Joyce Porter voted in favor of continuing Slan’s contract.
TAX TAKEN OFF AGENDA: Board members had planned to discuss and approve placing a tax proposition before voters later this year.
Galmon, however, removed the item from the agenda, saying he was “hearing unrest” about the tax from some residents who want more financial information before a tax goes on the ballot.
Galmon said before he brings a tax measure up at a later time, he wants a fiscal plan already in place sufficient to adequately fund school district salaries and facilities.
