The blog Gannetoid.com is reporting that three Gannett papers – The (Asheville, NC) Citizen Times, The Greenville (SC) News, and The (Lousville, KY) Courier-Journal will consolidate operations. According to Gannetoid, design work and editing could be done at a central hub and then distributed to each newspaper. A program called CCI NewsGate is the system being used, according to Gannettoid.
LPNO has heard persistent rumors that the same plan is in store for Louisiana. With the relatively close geographic proximity of Louisiana’s Gannett papers, such a system would be logical. The (Shreveport) Times, The (Monroe) News-Star, The (Alexandria) Town Talk, The (Lafayette) Daily Advertiser and The (Opelousas) Daily World are all within a two to three hour drive from one another. Additionally, The (Jackson, MS) Clarion-Ledger and The Hattiesburg (MS) American could be included in the hub system.
The Hattiesburg paper is little more than a news bureau for the Jackson paper, as it is printed in Jackson and trucked down US 49 to Hattiesburg.
Do not be surprised if soon all the Gannett papers in Louisiana are printed in a central location and then distributed to the various towns.
